Timacuan Florida History

Timacuan Florida is named after the Timacuan Indians who were considered to be the first Floridians. The Timacuan Indians populated Central and Northern Florida over 200 years before the Seminole Indians arrived. Disease and cultural clashes left only a small number of them by the 1700s. These few allied themselves with the Spanish against British invaders in a losing fight. They and the Spanish were then exiled to Cuba.

Timacuan Is located in Lake Mary, Florida, approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown Orlando. There are over five hundred homes located in nine unique neighborhoods. The first community, Stratton Hill, was approved for development in the late 1980’s by the city of Lake Mary. It is built on orange groves and farmland owned by  an old line Florida family, the Stenstrom’s. Development continued into the nineties and was considered complete when the neighborhoods of Fairway Hills, Summerlin, and Hopewell Creek were finished. The community was transferred to the homeowners in 2001 by the last developer, and is now run by a homeowner-controlled board of directors.
