Sanford Florida History
Sanford, Florida is the county seat of Seminole County, and in 2006 the U.S. Census Bureau recorded a population of 49,124. Situated beside Lake Monroe and the St. John’s River, Sanford was established in the 1830s and was first used as a U.S. Army post to insure peace with the Seminole Indians. Sanford’s first name was Fort Mellon, named after a Captain Charles Mellon, who was killed in an Indian attack. Later it became Mellonville, and ten years later it became a thriving trade center with the arrival of commercial steamboat service. The native Seminole Indians were eventually expelled, and the area become more accessible to settlers. President Lincoln’s Minister to Belgium, Henry Sanford, bought 12,500 acres of land and worked to attract settlers from all over the world to come there and farm the land. By 1877, Mellonville was incorporated and became known as Sanford. By 1910 it became one of the largest vegetable shipping centers in the United States, and was known as ‘Celery City’. Agriculture started to wane by 1940, when it started to make more economic sense to grow produce in frost-free South Florida.
The economy was bolstered in 1942 by the establishment of the Naval Air Station at Sanford. It brought jobs and new families to the area. At its peak the base was home to 3000 personnel. By 1968, NAS Sanford was closed which resulted in a substantial economic loss for the city and the county. After several transitions the airfield is now the Orlando Sanford International Airport, which commenced commercial airline service in 1995. By 1971, with the Opening of Walt Disney World, the economy started to recuperate with the help of tourism and residential development.
