Orlando is one of Florida's most popular destinations for those looking to relocate from out of state or within Florida. It is the county seat of Orange County and is the center of the Greater Orlando metropolitan region. During a census taken by the United States Census Bureau, the area of Orlando served as a home for an estimated 230, 500 residents making it the fifth largest city in Florida by city proper population.

Orlando was incorporated in July of 1875 and became a city in 1885.

Originally, Orlando was the center of a major citrus-growing region, now, Orlando is known as being of one of the World Famous Vacation Destinations including Walt Disney World Resort, the Universal Orlando Resort, and Sea World. With popular attractions such as these, Orlando became the third most visited American city among travelers in 2007. Since the establishment as a major tourist attraction in the 1970s, the local economy in Orlando has diversified, and today the region is the center of operations for companies servicing Central Florida.

Orlando is also home to the University of Central Florida, the largest university campus by student enrollment in the state of Florida and among one of the largest universities in the United States.

Orlando was not settled by European settlers until around 1836, it was originally populated by the Creek and Seminole Native American tribes.
Today, very little achaeological sites exist even today. Before it was Orlando, it was actually known as Jernigan which was the last name of the first permanent settler to the area, Aaron Jernigan. Jernigan aquired the land along Lake Holden by the terms of the Armed Occupation Act of 1842, but most pioneers did not arrive in the area until after the Third Seminole War in the 1850s. Once the residents did arrive, they mainly survived by making a living as cattle ranchers.

It is unsure how the name of Orlando came about for the area. A local legend says the name "Orlando" was derived when a soldier named Orlando Reeves allegedly died in the area during the Second Seminole War. It is also said that Orlando Reeves, sometimes Rees, operated a sugar mill and plantation about 30 miles to the North in Volusia County. Pioneer settlers simply found his name carved into a tree and assumed it was a marker for his grave site. After this discovery, the pioneer settlers referred to the area as "Orlando's Grave" later to become Orlando. Another local legend for the name of Orlando comes from some believing that the city was named after one of the main characters in the Shakespeare play "As You Like It."

The period from 1875 to 1895 is remembered as Orlando's Golden Era. During this period of time, Orlando became the hub of Florida's citrus industry until the "Great Freeze" of 1894 to 1895 which forced many owners to give up their independent groves.

One of the biggest events in the history of Orlando occurred in 1965 when Walt Disney announced plans to build Walt Disney World. Disney considered building his park in Miami and Tampa, but went with Orlando mainly because it would keep his investment at a lower risk of getting hit with hurricanes in years to come. Walt Disney World opened in October of 1971 which set off an explosive population rise as well as economic growth for the area. Today, Orlando is consistently ranked as one of the top vacation destinations in the world and now boasts more theme parks and entertainment attractions than anywhere else in the world.

Another major factor in the growth of Orlando occurred in 1962 when the new Orlando Jetport was built from a portion of the McCory Air Force Base.

Today, Orlando is one of Florida's most popular areas not only to vacation to but to live in as well. Orlando features Florida's warm and humid subtropical climate and is located in-land far enough making it more uncommon for residents to see a hurricane than it would be in a place like Miami which is closer to the shore.
