About Lake County Florida
Lake County Florida was created in 1887 from areas of Sumter County and Orange County. This area has been inhabited for thousands of years. Some of the earliest inhabitants were the Timucuan Indians. They were drawn to the area for its mild weather, fertile land and an abundance of fish and game. Evidence of their presence is found throughout the county in over 1000 archeological sites.
As of a 2006 Census-estimate, the population was 290,435. The county seat is Tavares, Florida, and there are approximately 1,400 named lakes in the county. Lake County boasts Sugarloaf Mountain, which is the highest point in Florida. Early industry relied on the land for economic survival; however, too many unexpected freezes devastated the crops. At one time Lake County was known for its record crops of peaches, tomatoes, watermelon, ferns, and citrus. Some farmers still remain; however, the economy was revitalized as other industries moved into the area.

Lake County Schools have been recognized as a model district for its Blueprint for Career Preparation plan. Starting in the eighth grade students are given the opportunity to prepare for a trade or post-secondary education by enrolling in vocational programs while attending regular classes. The Lake County School board administers 48 Public Schools, 7 charter schools, and two special needs centers. In addition to the public schools, there are 42 private schools. For higher education, there is Lake Sumter Community College and Lake Technical Center.
